I LOVE the beach. I'm pretty sure that being born in Hawaii has something to do with my love affair with the ocean. I love the sand, the sun, the water, the ocean breeze, ALL of it! I have been blessed to have visited (and even lived on) some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. In January, my husband, sister, brother in law and I returned to one of my absolute favorite beaches in the world: Honeymoon Beach on Water Island, St Thomas, USVI. We were on a 7 day cruise of the Eastern Caribbean with St. Thomas as one of our ports. This was our third time on this same itinerary and going back to Honeymoon Beach is the highlight of this cruise for me. I do extensive research before vacations and had read about this "secret" beach on a cruising forum. Because we were on a Princess cruise, we would be docking right next to Crown Bay Marina. This marina is where you pick up the water taxi that takes you to Water Island. It costs $10 round trip and takes under 10 minutes. It is about a 10 minute walk from our ship to the Marina and water taxi stop.
I'm realizing as I am writing this how much of a perfect 10 this spot really is--quite literally! Once you get to Water Island, it is another 10 minute walk up a hill and then 10 minutes downhill to PARADISE! There is a little overlook about halfway there to give you a glimpse of the paradise that awaits:
The first time I laid eyes on this beach, I couldn't form words. Then, as I came down the hill and looked to my right as more of the beach came into view, I see SAILBOATS! Not just sailboats in beautiful water, but sailboats framed by cactus! I live in Texas so this was extra special. I hadn't even made it to the beach and I was already in Heaven! I knew we had found a truly special place that would be calling us back (again and again). I started to walk a little faster (after catching my breath from the beauty that surrounded me) because NOW I was in a hurry to get to the final destination.
I felt like I was in the middle of a great movie. We were on a private beach in the Caribbean and the weather was perfect. I had packed lunch for us so we had food when we got hungry. All that was left to do was SOAK up the SUNSHINE and enjoy Gods artwork. Since I'm better at taking pictures than I am at writing, I am going to stop talking and let you just enjoy some visual stimulation. You're welcome!
After a couple of hours of peace and quiet the party boat comes in and drops off the loud group that has been enjoying their rum drinks :-) They are part of a snorkel/sail tour group that paid about $100 for the experience. We didn't get rum drinks or off island snorkeling, but for $10, I will take our day ANY DAY versus the expensive tour excursion. We pack up our stuff and head back to the ship. I am sad to leave because I know that we will never have the experience we had that day again. Every year more and more people find out about this "private paradise" and its becoming more popular. It's the only place I have been that I have (almost) not wanted to share with others because of this very reason.
As sad as we are to leave Honeymoon Beach and Water Island, we are happy to be getting back on our beautiful ship. We cruise right next to her as we approach the Marina. One of my favorite things about cruising is the opportunity to see many islands in one week. It is a great way to sample many places to see which ones you may want to go back and spend more time at. If you happen to be in St Thomas, USVI for a day or more, I highly recommend the trip to Water Island. For $20 you can get "2 tickets to Paradise" too!
